Abstract: ... Sensor selection is a useful method to help reduce data throughput, as well as computational, power, and hardware requirements, while still maintaining acceptable performance. Although minimizing the Cramér-Rao bound has been adopted previously for sparse sensing, it did not consider multiple targets and unknown source models. In this work, we propose to tackle the sensor selection problem for angle of arrival estimation using the worst-case Cramér-Rao bound of two uncorrelated sources. To do so, we cast the problem as a convex semi-definite program and retrieve the binary selection by randomized rounding. Through numerical examples related to a linear array, we illustrate the proposed method and show that it leads to the natural selection of elements at the edges plus the center of the linear array. This contrasts with the typical solutions obtained from minimizing the single-target Cramér-Rao bound.

Abstract: ... Doppler velocity estimation in pulse-Doppler radar is done by evaluating the target returns of bursts of pulses. While this provides convenience and accuracy, it requires multiple pulses. In adaptive and cognitive radar systems, the ability to adapt on consecutive pulses, instead of bursts, brings potential performance benefits. Hence, with radar transceiver arrays growing increasingly larger in their number of elements over the years, it may be time to re-evaluate how Doppler velocity can be estimated when using large planar arrays. In this work, we present variance bounds on the estimation of velocity using the Doppler shift as it appears in the array model. We also propose an efficient method of performing the velocity estimation and we verify its performance using Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract: ... This paper develops efficient channel estimation techniques for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under practical hardware limitations, including an arbitrary array geometry and a hybrid hardware structure. Taking on an angle-based approach, this work adopts a generalized array manifold separation approach via Jacobi-Anger approximation, which transforms a non-ideal, non-uniform array manifold into a virtual array domain with a desired uniform geometric structure to facilitate super-resolution angle estimation and channel acquisition. Accordingly, structure-based optimization techniques are developed to effectively estimate both the channel covariance and the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) within a short sensing time. The different time-varying scales of channel path angles versus path gains are capitalized to design a two-step CSI estimation scheme that can quickly sense fading channels. Theoretical results are provided on the fundamental limits of the proposed technique in terms of sample efficiency. For computational efficiency, a fast iterative algorithm is developed via the alternating direction method of multipliers. Other related issues such as spurious-peak cancellation in non-uniform linear arrays and extensions to higher-dimensional cases are also discussed. Simulations testify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches in hybrid mmWave massive MIMO systems with arbitrary arrays.

Abstract: ... Graphs have well-documented merits for modeling complex systems, including financial, biological, and social networks. Network nodes can also include attributes such as age or gender of users in a social network. However, the size of real-world networks can be massive, and nodal attributes can be unavailable. Moreover, new nodes may emerge over time, and their attributes must be inferred in real time. In this context, the present paper deals with scalable learning of nodal attributes by estimating a nodal function based on noisy observations at a subset of nodes. A multikernel-based approach is developed which is scalable to large-size networks. The novel method is capable of providing real-time evaluation of the function values on newly-joining nodes without resorting to a batch solver. In addition, the novel scheme only relies on an encrypted version of each node's connectivity, which promotes privacy. Experiments on real datasets corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract: ... As the size of the sensor network grows, synchronization starts to become the main bottleneck for distributed computing. As a result, efforts in several areas have been focused on the convergence analysis of asynchronous computational methods. In this work, we aim to cross-pollinate distributed graph filters with results in parallel computing to provide guarantees for asynchronous graph filtering. To alleviate the possible reduction of convergence speed due to asynchronous updates, we also show how a slight modification to the graph filter recursion, through operator splitting, can be performed to obtain faster convergence. Finally, through numerical experiments the performance of the discussed methods is illustrated.
